EU Ban on Fluorescent Lamps – What You Need to Know

The European Union has introduced legislation to phase out fluorescent lighting as part of its commitment to reducing hazardous waste, improving energy efficiency, and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive and Ecodesign Regulations, the manufacture and import of many fluorescent lamps have now been prohibited due to their mercury content and relatively high energy consumption.

Key Changes

  • T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps were banned from manufacture and import from 25 August 2023.

  • Various compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and other mercury-containing lamp types have also been phased out.

  • Additional specialist fluorescent lamps are scheduled to be withdrawn in stages where suitable alternatives become available.

Although existing fluorescent lamps may still be used until they reach the end of their service life, sourcing replacements will become increasingly difficult as stocks are depleted.
